Science-Led Storytelling: creating compelling science video productions

Making complicated subjects easy to understand
At Paper Films, we specialise in scientific video production that takes complex ideas and turns them into clear, engaging films without dumbing anything down.
Some of the projects we enjoy most are also the hardest to do well. Explaining complicated science, advanced technology or cutting-edge research on film is a delicate balancing act. You need clarity, nuance and intelligence, all wrapped up in a story that works for a real audience, not just an expert one.
That’s where we come in.
Turning complexity into compelling film
We’re experts at crafting strong narratives and advising on how to best use your existing assets, including people, research, data and environments. Whether it’s a healthcare video, a bioscience film or an advanced materials explainer video, our focus is always on story first.
Over the years, we’ve learned where the real challenges lie.
The challenges of bioscience & technology video production
Experts on camera
World-leading academics aren’t always comfortable on camera. Many are used to conference halls, not speaking directly to a broader audience. We work closely with contributors to help them feel relaxed, confident and natural, while distilling complex ideas into video-friendly language.
Visually challenging environments
Amazing things happen in labs and research centres, but they’re not always the most visually exciting places to film. A cutting-edge mass spectrometer might be revolutionary, but it doesn’t automatically translate to great visuals. Our job is to find creative ways to make these environments work on screen.
Depth vs accessibility
How deep do you go? Defining the audience is critical. A science film aimed at specialists can afford to take its time and explore detail. A video for a general audience needs a much clearer, more streamlined approach. We help you find the right level, every time.
Cutting edge motion GFX
Complicated ideas require more than just great content and beautiful camera-work. Motion graphics can bring scientific procedures to life, making the complex simple and your video look fantastic.
Why use video in bioscience, healthcare & technology?
We regularly advise organisations to invest in professional video production when they need to:
● Reach stakeholders and clearly explain what they’re doing — and why securing funding matters
● Explain complex topics and distil what an organisation does, bringing websites and digital platforms to life
● Show behind the scenes, introducing the people driving innovation and technological progress
● Inspire the next generation to get into STEM and help shape the future
● Create training videos for complex equipment, processes and procedures
● Support funding bids and pitches, helping submissions stand out and connect emotionally
Experience that matters
Paper Films is a Manchester video production company working across the UK. Our team includes ex-journalist producers and interviewers, experienced directors and motion graphics specialists, making us particularly well suited to dynamic science and research films where accuracy, storytelling and pace all matter.
We’ve worked with organisations including The Euroscience Open Forum, Made Smarter, The University of Manchester and the Manchester Inward Development Agency (MIDAS). Along the way we’ve filmed inside the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, explored the Graphene Institute, delved into the depths of CERN and captured many other spaces where innovation is happening.
Because if you’re doing amazing work, why not shout about it?
Science Video Production Case Study – Manchester & ESOF
Paper Films produced a promotional film celebrating Manchester as a world-leading science city and host of the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), a prestigious international science congresses. The film brings together voices from across the scientific community, featuring Professor Brian Cox, leading Manchester-based research scientists, and local school children, highlighting the city’s role in shaping the future of science.
Designed for a global audience, the science video production combines inspiring interviews with cinematic visuals to communicate Manchester’s scientific ambition, innovation and impact. The completed case study film was used to support the international congress, positioning Manchester as a hub for world-class research, education and scientific collaboration.

Flow Cytometry Training Film – Science Video Production Case Study
Paper Films produced a specialist science video for PhD students to explain flow cytometry and demonstrate the use of advanced lab equipment. The film combines real lab footage, authentic contributions from scientists, and clear demonstrations to make complex procedures accessible.
Using motion graphics and 3D modelling, we visualised the inner workings of flow cytometers and cellular processes, bringing clarity to intricate concepts. By blending expert guidance with dynamic visuals, the film delivers both educational value and engaging storytelling.

Eco-I NW - producing a suite of science Case Study Films
Paper Films produced a suite of science case study films for Lancaster showcasing how PhD students collaborated with businesses to tackle real-world challenges.
The films combine interviews, drone footage, and user-generated content to highlight the students’ expertise and the impact of the programme. Designed for online use and for presentation at a large event at Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry, the case study films effectively celebrate innovation, research, and collaboration.
This project demonstrates how science video production can turn complex research programmes into engaging, accessible stories that resonate with both professional and public audiences.
